Prison Farm Building Project

I have been blog-absent for a couple months in the midst of transiting to India and now to the U.S. However, prison work in Madagascar has continued non-stop thanks to our marvelous team and donor support.

The project has faced significant challenges included being hit by two cyclones, bridges being washed out and transport vehicles breaking down one after the other. Nevertheless, our resilient team has managed to finish constructing the buildings to house 40 inmates who will work the 150 acres of prime prison farmland. This is a crucial step towards resolving the food security crisis in Antalaha Prison. Feeding 2000 prisoners everyday in an overcrowded facility has been untenable in a poor country such as Madagascar and prisoner death from starvation has been a horrific consequence.

People ask why the prisoners don’t try and escape this low security facility. The reason is that knowing that they will end up in Antalaha prison if caught is a huge deterrent.

Today the team enjoyed a celebration feast together. They are awaiting an official opening from the prison head of the district.

The following is a short video of this project. We still need funds to develop the farmland, and welcome any donations.
